The Wash Cycle

The wash cycle.

Roughly fifteen minutes into a typical cycle, the detergent door pops open and the real cleaning begins — hot, soapy water sprayed under pressure across every dish in the rack.

Releasing the detergent

The detergent door is held shut by a small latch. Depending on the model, it's released by a wax motor that softens with heat, a bi-metal trigger, or a solenoid fired by the control board.

Timing matters: if the door opens too early the detergent gets washed away during the rinse; if it opens too late the dishes don't get clean.

Circulating soapy water

The circulation pump keeps running and now pushes a mix of hot water and dissolved detergent through the spray arms. Enzymes in modern detergents break down protein and starch residue while surfactants lift grease off surfaces.

On models with a third rack or extra wash zones, a diverter valve sends water to different spray arms at different times to give every rack adequate coverage.

Filtering and recirculating

Food chopped off the dishes is either ground up by a chopper blade or caught in a filter at the bottom of the tub so that the same water can be reused throughout the wash without redepositing soil on the dishes.

When the wash time is done, the drain pump empties out the dirty, soapy water in preparation for the final rinse.

Detergent pod or cup is still full at the end of the cycle

  • Detergent door blocked by a tall item in the upper rack — load smaller next time.
  • Failed wax motor or detergent dispenser solenoid — the door never gets the signal to open.
  • Broken detergent door spring or latch.
  • Failed control board not sending power to the dispenser at the right time.

Dishes come out with a white, gritty film

  • Hard water leaving mineral deposits — add a rinse aid and consider a water softener.
  • Detergent dispenser opening too early so soap is washed away before the wash phase.
  • Water not getting hot enough to fully dissolve detergent (check heating element and thermistor).
  • Overloaded racks preventing detergent from circulating to every dish.

Dishes come out greasy or with food still stuck on

  • Clogged or broken chopper blade — food particles redeposit on dishes.
  • Clogged spray arm jets reducing wash pressure.
  • Weak circulation pump that can't push water hard enough to dislodge stuck-on food.
  • Using the wrong detergent (gel and bargain detergents often underperform vs. modern pods).
  • Insufficient hot water at the inlet — running the kitchen sink for a moment before starting the cycle often helps.

Excessive suds or foam coming out of the door

  • Wrong detergent — regular dish soap was used by mistake.
  • Too much rinse aid being dispensed; check the dispenser dial.
  • Food residue from greasy items creating natural sudsing.

Cycle runs unusually long or never finishes

  • Heating element failure — many models pause the wash until water reaches a target temperature, and if it never does, the cycle runs indefinitely.
  • Failed thermistor sending bad temperature data.
  • Stuck diverter valve so only one set of spray arms runs and the sensor never sees a complete wash.
  • Control board fault.
