The Rinse Cycle

The rinse cycle.

Once enough water is in the tub, the dishwasher rinses your dishes to loosen food particles before detergent is released. This is where the circulation pump, spray arms, and heating element all start working together.

Starting the circulation pump

After the fill cycle ends, a timer or sensor tells the control board that there's enough water in the tub. Power is sent to the circulation motor, which pressurizes water and forces it up through the spray arms.

The spray arms spin from the reaction force of water shooting out their angled nozzles — there's no separate motor turning them.

Heating the water

As soon as the water is circulating, most dishwashers begin heating it with a heating element in the bottom of the tub (or, on newer models, an in-line flow-through heater). Warmer water dissolves grease and food residue much more effectively than cold.

A thermistor monitors the water temperature and tells the control board when the target temperature is reached.

Loosening and rinsing away food

The hot, pressurized water knocks loose food particles from the dishes. Those particles are either ground up by a food chopper or caught in a filter at the bottom of the tub.

The water is then drained out by the drain pump so that the wash cycle can start with fresh water.

Spray arms aren't spinning / dishes come out dirty

  • Clogged spray arm nozzles — food particles or hard-water deposits blocking the jets. Soak the arms in vinegar and clear the holes with a toothpick.
  • Worn or broken circulation pump impeller — the motor runs but doesn't move enough water.
  • Failed circulation motor — no humming sound when the cycle should be running.
  • Overloaded racks blocking the arms from rotating freely.

Loud grinding or humming during rinse

  • Foreign object (broken glass, fruit pit, piece of plastic) stuck in the food chopper or pump impeller.
  • Failing circulation motor bearings.
  • Dry pump seal — usually means a leak is starting and the pump is about to fail.

Water never gets hot

  • Burned-out heating element — test for continuity with a multimeter (typically 15–30 ohms).
  • Faulty thermistor sending the wrong temperature reading to the control board.
  • Home water heater set too low or too far from the dishwasher; many dishwashers expect incoming water around 120°F.
  • Failed control board relay that supplies power to the heating element.

Cycle stalls partway through rinse

  • Drain pump can't clear the dirty rinse water, so the next stage can't begin.
  • Thermistor failure — control board waits forever for a temperature it will never see.
  • Door latch intermittently losing contact, pausing the cycle.

Water doesn't drain between rinse and wash

  • Clogged filter or drain hose — food debris, labels from jars, or grease buildup.
  • Failed drain pump — listen for the pump running; silence usually means a bad motor or jammed impeller.
  • Kinked drain hose behind the dishwasher.
  • Garbage disposal knockout plug never removed during installation.
