The Dry Cycle

The dry cycle.

The wash is over, the water is gone — but the dishes are still soaking wet. The dry cycle is what gets them ready to put away, and it can work in a few very different ways depending on your dishwasher.

How it works

Heated dry

Older and mid-range dishwashers use an exposed heating element in the bottom of the tub. After the final rinse, the element heats the air inside the dishwasher and the warm air evaporates water off the dishes.

A vent on the door — opened by a solenoid or wax motor — lets the moist air escape into your kitchen.

Condensation dry

Most modern dishwashers (especially Bosch, Miele, and other European brands) skip the heating element entirely. They rely on the fact that the stainless-steel tub stays cooler than the final hot rinse water.

Water evaporates off the hot dishes and condenses on the cooler tub walls, then runs down into the drain. Rinse aid plays a big role here because it makes water sheet off dishes instead of beading up.

Fan-assisted and zeolite drying

Higher-end models add a fan to actively pull moist air out of the tub. Some Bosch models also use a tray of zeolite minerals that release heat when they absorb moisture, drying the dishes faster and more thoroughly.

An auto-open door feature on some dishwashers cracks the door at the end of the cycle to let steam escape — also part of the drying strategy.

Dishes still wet at the end of the cycle

  • Empty rinse aid dispenser — without rinse aid, water beads on dishes instead of sheeting off, especially on plastics.
  • Burned-out heating element on heated-dry models (check continuity, typically 15–30 ohms).
  • Wash water not getting hot enough during the final rinse, so there isn't enough thermal energy left to evaporate water.
  • Vent door stuck closed — moist air has nowhere to go.
  • On condensation-dry models, unloading the bottom rack first dumps water from the upper rack onto already-dry dishes; unload top first.

Only plastics come out wet

  • Normal-ish behavior for condensation-dry dishwashers — plastic doesn't retain heat like glass or ceramic so water doesn't evaporate off it as well.
  • Low or empty rinse aid.
  • Loading plastics on the bottom rack instead of the top, where they catch dripping water.

Burning smell or melted plastic during the dry cycle

  • A plastic item fell from the upper rack onto the heating element. Inspect the element and clean off any melted residue before running another cycle.
  • Heating element shorting to the tub — stop using the dishwasher and have it inspected; this can be a shock and fire hazard.

Water spots, streaks, or cloudy glassware after drying

  • No rinse aid in the dispenser.
  • Hard water leaving mineral deposits as the water evaporates.
  • Wash water not hot enough to fully dissolve detergent and minerals.
  • Cloudy glassware can also be permanent etching from soft water plus too much detergent — that damage can't be reversed.

Vent door not opening (heated-dry models)

  • Failed vent solenoid or wax motor.
  • Broken vent door linkage or spring.
  • Control board not sending power to the vent at the right time.

Heating element glows red or stays on too long

  • Stuck heating element relay on the control board — element gets power when it shouldn't.
  • Failed high-limit thermostat allowing the element to overheat.
  • Stop the cycle and unplug the dishwasher; continued operation can melt parts or start a fire.
